June 13, 2011. Our Company Pacifichub Corporation, held it's first Leadership Congress and the highlight of the event is none other than Chot Reyes, yes the basketball coach.
Being a basketball fan, I looked forward to this event, of course to have pictures for me to put in my blog and facebook, bragging purposes. am a bit cynical, since am sure, he'll talk our ears out, purely on basketball.
So the day came, and judging from the participants eyes, you can tell who's a basketball fan and who's not, since everyone is excited about Chot Reyes, I guess, we have the same thought of what he's going to do or talk about.
Finally, it was kicked off, by an opening speech of our CEO, Beaver Lopez, he kept it short and simple, he just welcomed everyone and provide his insights and expectations.
The first speaker is an undergraduate from Maryknoll (now Miriam college), who happened to be the former President/CEO of McCann-Erikson Philippines, who's one of the big players in the world, advertising wise.
She had a lot of things in her pocket, however, on my own opinion, everything is normal as to some speakers whom I listened to.
Nonetheless, the most valuable thing that I learned from her, is that, when you want to be great, the only person who will hinder you from achieving it, is yourself, the time you allow yourself to doubt your capacity to be great, then you will not be, ever.
During her speech, Chot Reyes, walked in silently, he just sat down on one of the tables at the back, and patiently waited for his turn.
When he was introduced, all of us gave him a very warm welcome, which he really appreciated.
So the moment everyone is waiting for is here, everyone readied their cameras and mobile phones as I readied mine to take snaps of him, bragging purposes.
Inside me, am thinking, this should be short, since I already know whats he's going to talk about, how to coach, how to win, how to become champion, blah, blah, blah, or if only I have the power, at that time, what will I do is, go with the talking, and let everyone take pictures of you.
He started it with an introduction of himself, and the things around it. He started coaching way back in 83, during his college days for a pasarel team in Ateneo (of course), and that started it all.
His first championship in PBA, is with Purefoods, with big players such as the Captain, Defense Minister, The Bullet, to name a few. (if your a Purefoods die hard, you would know who are these players).
For four years, he stayed in Purefoods with, if am not mistaken, 3 championships, not bad.
After which, he went to Sta. Lucia with a very lucrative package, that Purefoods declined, when he bid for his contract. He's only hired in Sta. Lucia for 3 months, after that, they axed him, he even joked that during his unemployment, everytime the clock hits 11 o clock he would say "UY ALAS ONSE NA, EAT BULAGA NA" (no wowowee at that time).
So his story led one thing to other, and sooner that we expected, it's over, of course after which, is photo ops.
After his speech, am really surprised that he exceeded everyone's expectation, about his talk, from his spiels down to his presentation, everything is a sure hit for everyone.
Of all the things he discussed, 2 things really strucked me (everyone I guess), FIRST, he gave a very effective coaching/communication formula, which is applicable, virtually in any set up, so long as there is a relationship involved, be it work, romantic, husband and wife, father and child, mother and child, lolo to apo, etc. relationship, it's the CONTINUE, STOP, and START formula.
it's simple, the two parties should sit-down and discuss to one another, what are the things they want to CONTINUE doing, STOP doing, and START doing.
He even said, that if your going to do this formula on your family or to someone your romantically linked with, be ready with a box of tissue, you know what I mean.
Secondly, I'll say this in Filipino to add weight and emphasis on it, since it's really big, he said "HINDI OBLIGASYON NI BEAVER LOPEZ (CEO) NA KAYO'Y GAWING EMPLEYADO HAMAMBUHAY PARA SA INYONG KABUHAYAAN, PERO OBLIGASYON NYANG GAWIN KAYONG EMPLOYABLE HABAMBUHAY PARA SA INYONG KABUYAHAN" after he said that, everyone gave him a standing ovation, very well said.
Indeed, a very informative and knowledge packed event, and am looking forward to the second one. Cheers!
